Townsville Connection Road Upgrade – Stages 2, 3 and 4

ABI Projects provided contract administration and project delivery services for the $200m Townsville Connection Road Project, a key initiative to improve traffic flow and safety across the Ross River in Townsville. The project involved constructing a new upstream bridge adjacent to the existing Bowen Road Bridge, increasing river crossing capacity from two lanes to four.

Delivered in conjunction with upgrades of Stuart Drive between University Road and Bowen Road Bridge, the scope included:

  • Duplication of Bowen Road Bridge and pavement upgrades to approaches
  • Intersection upgrades at Gartrell Drive, Mervyn Crossman Drive/Fairfield Waters Drive, and Kokoda Street
  • Improved pedestrian and cyclist facilities, including upgraded crossings and connections to a refurbished underpass
  • Enhanced safety features, including upgraded lighting and CCTV installation

This upgrade improves safety and driveability for the 24,000 vehicles using this crossing daily, while delivering better active transport connections for the community.
